This year we've kept the gates open for a little longer as the hydrangeas were still putting on a good show. Hydrangea paniculata 'October Bride' (true to its name) has put on a good show. So we're closing up on Saturday, 23 November and keeping the walled garden...
This aspera has given us a pleasant surprise this year. After not performing well for a number of years, a hard prune 2 years ago has brought new life. It's a late flowering one too so has lengthened the hydrangea season.
Photos taken this week show that hydrangeas will give you colour through October and on to November.
Towards the end of Summer, the large sepals of macrophyllas and serratas will flip over and begin to take on green, yellow, pink and burgundy tones.
Our open day this year is on Sunday, 4 August 2019. Meet us at the café in Darley Park for free guided tours at 11am or 2pm. Or just come and tour the gardens on your own. Our volunteers will be there to welcome you to the collection.
