Synonyms: Possibly Ezo Nori Ustugi
Origins: The origin is attributed to Charles S. Sargent who discovered this plant on the island of Hokkaido in Japan. He collected seeds in 1893 which were grown at Arnold Arboretum in the USA
Awards: RHS - Award of Merit in 1956, and Award of Garden Merit in 1984 and 1992.

It differs from other paniculata cultivars in various ways. It has very strong sturdy branches and can form a small tree to 5m tall.  Flowering time is very early, usually June.  The flattened 15cm panicles are flattened  and the sepals are unusually prominently serrated.  Praecox means early.
